How to Banish Puffy Eyes, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles Gently and effectively
Causes of Puffy Eyes
Inadequate sleep can cause fluid to build up around the eyes, leading to puffy eyes. High salt intake can also make your body retain water, including in the area around your eyes. And, as we age, the tissues and muscles around our eyes weaken, making it easier for fluid to accumulate. Allergic reactions can also cause inflammation and fluid retention around the eyes.
Finally, poor lymphatic drainage can contribute to puffy eyes. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing excess fluids, waste, and toxins from your tissues. When the lymphatic system isn’t working efficiently, fluid can accumulate, leading to puffiness. Try sleeping with your head in an elevated position!
- Lack of sleep
- High salt intake
- Waekeing tissues and muscles due to aging
- Allergies
- Poor lymph drianage
The Culprit Behind Undereye Wrinkles
The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate, making it more prone to wrinkling. Then there’s the peril of too much sun exposure. UV rays break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to premature wrinkles. Photoaging is a major contributor to crow’s feet!
Smoking also accelerates the aging process further by reducing blood flow to the skin and depleting it of essential nutrients. It also generates free radicals that damage collagen and elastin, leading to earlier, deeper wrinkles.
Finally, your genetics play a huge role in how and when your skin develops wrinkles. If your parents showed signs of early eye wrinkles, you might too.

What Creates Dark Circles?
Dark circles can make you look tired, stressed, or older than you feel. Sometimes, they are simply a matter of genetics. If your parents had them, you might be more prone to developing them too. In some cases, inherited traits like thinner skin around the eyes can make blood vessels more visible, giving the appearance of dark circles.
So, when you don’t sleep enough, your skin can become paler, making the blood vessels beneath the thin skin around your eyes more noticeable.
Also, fluid retention due to lack of sleep can contribute to a puffy eyes and dark circles. As you age, the skin around your eyes becomes thinner and loses fat and collagen. This can make the blood vessels under the skin more visible, resulting in dark circles.
Sometimes dark circles are caused by increased melanin production, leading to a darker tone around the eyes. This is more common in individuals with darker skin tones and can be exacerbated by sun exposure.
In addition, poor diet, dehydration, alcohol, and smoking/vaping can all contribute to dark circles by affecting your skin’s health and circulation. Too much sun can prompt your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. This can darken the area under your eyes, making dark circles more pronounced.

How Much Eye Care Cream Use
Since the skin around your eyes is so delicate, many beauties think they need to apply more product — and more often — but that’s not the case.
A tiny amount, about the size of a rice kernel for Neo Genesis and maybe a pea size for most others, is all you need for both eyes! Too much can overstimulate the area, leading to dryness.
Also, please don’t apply eye cream multiple times a day—once daily is enough to do the trick! Use your pinky or ring finger to delicately dab the product on. Be sure not to press too hard and cause friction. And again, do not rub the product in.
In fact, avoid eye rubbing altogether! Rubbing can cause the fragile skin to stretch, leading fine lines and wrinkles over time. It can also push dirt, bacteria, and other particles into your eyes, leading to irritation, redness, and even infection.
Moreover, frequent rubbing might break tiny blood vessels under the skin, leading to dark circles or bruising around the eyes.
A Word About Removing Eye Makeup
Don’t use baby wipes. Although they are gentle enough for a baby’s skin, they may contain fragrances, alcohol, or preservatives that can irritate the skin around your eyes. This can lead to redness, dryness, or even allergic reactions.
Also, the material of baby wipes is not as soft as products specifically designed for the delicate eye area. Using them to remove makeup may require more rubbing or tugging, which can cause irritation, and contribute to fine lines and wrinkles over time.
What about micellar water? Micellar water is designed to be mild and suitable for all skin types and doesn't contain harsh ingredients like alcohol or fragrances.
It features tiny micelles — molecules that attract dirt, oil, and makeup — allowing it to gently lift and remove eye makeup, without the need for rubbing. Just make sure to select a trustworthy brand!
Personally, we love to use Jane Iredale’s Beauty Prep Face Cleanser to remove our eye makeup as part of our nighttime ritual — or even an organic cold pressed oil, like yes, your cooking companion, extra virgin olive oil!
If your eyes can tolerate it, jojoba oil is another safe and effective option!
